Project Update

A fantastic turnout at our first community forum

It's been a big week... firstly, we have some exciting news!

2515 is one of the communities Rewiring Australia has chosen to apply for funding to become a pilot electrified community!

Well done everyone to get to this stage! So what does this mean? Because we have shown such strong community interest, we have been selected to put in a proposal for funding from The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). We should know early next year if we are granted this funding.

Whether we receive financial assistance or not, it is clear that our community is ready to take on something bold and impactful so we will be working with you in one way or another to take on a mission of electrifying our own community.

Thank you to everyone for your support to date! Let's keep spreading the word so more households register their interest. In particular we need more renters, apartment dwellers, small businesses and strata properties to sign up to reflect the true composition of our community so please get the message out!

Wow what a turnout to the forum - thank you so much to everyone who came out on Sunday and apologies to those who wanted to come but missed out on a spot. Here is a link to video recording which we encourage everyone to listen to as Saul's presentation in particular has some important information about electrification and the pilot program.

Some of the key points from the forum

  • If we tackle household and commercial emissions, we will be tackling 70% of Australia's domestic emissions. This project is bigger than our postcode - and we could be paving the way for widespread emission reductions.

  • We spend about $5,000 per household on energy a year. If our postcode went fully electric, we'd collectively save $21million/year that we spend on fossil fuels!

  • In the first quarter of next year we should know if we get funding, but either way Electrify 2515 will be working with the community to implement electrification initiatives which will likely start happening around the middle of 2023.

  • The average electrified household in 2515 could save $4,650 per year by 2030.

  • We want to hear from local installers and tradies who would like to get involved.

  • Some of the things the project will be looking into: community batteries, community solar arrays, bulk purchasing discounts, low cost financing, an energy retailer co-op model etc

There was a lot more info covered at the forum, so we do encourage you to take the time to listen to the recording.

We still need more people to register to increase our chances of the pilot taking place, so please do ask your neighbours and friends to register their interest by completing the survey: electrify2515.org/survey

We will be in touch again soon. As always if you have any questions please get in touch and we will do our best to get back to you in a timely manner (please remember we're volunteer-run!).

Finally, we hope you are as excited as we are. Thank you again for your support and for being a part of this vibrant and fantastic community. Together we can achieve something powerful.

With thanks,
The Electrify 2515 Team
